  • Rug Guide: Tips from Armadillo & Co

0 comments / Posted on by Jennifer Brown

A rug is a great way to create warmth, make a focal point or just liven up a room.

Purchasing a good quality rug is a worthwhile investment, as well as providing warmth to a cold floor, a rug can also bring a cohesiveness to a room and really complete the look.

It's important to spend some time considering the colour, type of fabric and proportion of your chosen rug. With a few clever tricks, a rug can clearly define living areas and tie together your overall colour scheme.

We sat down with Jen Berlin from Armadillo & Co to get the insider tips and tricks for purchasing the right size rug for your space. These tried and tested layouts can anchor a room, helping you to achieve a design that flows well and is pleasing to the eye.

    Picking the right size

Generally, the rule is to choose the largest rug possible while still leaving space between the rug and the walls to highlight the flooring. This will make the room feel spacious, inviting and well designed. However, ensure you can still open doors and allow for any cut-off corners of the room, such as fireplaces.

    Furniture Placement

Place furniture that backs against walls off the rug, regardless of whether you are designing a living, dining or bedroom space. This will help the room to feel more spacious.

    Living Room

To pull together a living area, choose a rug large enough to sit fully or halfway under couches with any side chairs sitting partially or fully on the rug. Modular seating looks best when placed entirely on a rug with at least 20cm of rug visible behind. If you prefer to have a small rug, arrange the seating an even distance from it.

    Dining Room

The best size under a dining table is about 60-70cm wider all round and in proportion to the table, accommodating chairs when people are seated. Place a round rug under a round table to accentuate the table shape and enhance the room’s overall design.

    Bedroom

Smaller rugs are often used in bedrooms. They can be placed on each or just one side of the bed, creating a soft, warm place from which to step in and out of bed. For a more luxurious look, place a large rug underneath the bed with a generous amount visible at the foot and sides. Keep bedside tables off the rug to highlight the floor and enhance the feeling of space.

    Junior

As well as adding softness, rugs can add colour and whimsy to children’s rooms. Tuck the rug slightly under the bed to ensure little feet can find it easily. In a shared bedroom, place the rug between the beds to visually connect them and create a central play space. Smaller round rugs work well in nurseries under or next to cribs or make smaller spaces feel intimate and playful.

All Armadillo & Co rugs are available for order through The Vignette Room in standard sizes or can be custom made to fit your space. Browse the Armadillo & Co range here Contact us for information or for your free brochure.

  • Candle Care - Tips for prolonging the life of your favourite candle.

1 comment / Posted on by Jennifer Brown

Featured: The Luxuriate Pink Onyx Vessel with Rose Gold Insert

We take great pride in the fact that each candle we stock here at The Vignette Room has been personally tested and chosen to ensure it covers all the factors you could want from a scented candle for your home.

Each candle has a unique offering, whether it be a strong fragrance, it's chic vessel, the practical and affordable 'refillable' insert option or a combination of the above.

Featured: Jonathan Adler Peace Candle - Gold

We have compiled some care tips below to ensure you get the most out of your favourite candle.

    First Burn

The first time you burn your candle, allow it to burn for 3-4 hours or until the surface has melted away to the sides. Let it reset completely before your next burn. Soy wax has a burn memory, so follow these burn patterns each time and this will help your candle burn more evenly and avoid tunnelling.

    Wick Care

Each time you burn your candle, trim off the mushroom and trim to approximately 5mm to ensure an even and smoke-free burn. To assist in even burning ensure your wick is centred. If your wick becomes uncentered, gently reposition the wick whilst the wax is still molten.

    Scent Care

To maximise the scent throw of your candle burn in desired space for 30 mins before entering and close windows to prevent drafts. To clean dust or smoke marks on top of the vessel, gently rub the surface with a soft cloth either dry or dampened with water.

    Safety

Always extinguish your candle with a snuffer, or dip wick into melted wax and then straighten wick to prevent smoking and splattering. Never leave a burning candle unattended or move a burning candle. To prevent overheating of the vessel, never burn all the way to the end.

  • Winter is coming: Must-haves for a cosy bedroom haven.

0 comments / Posted on by Jennifer Brown

With the winter weather well and truly here to stay, now is the perfect time to layer up your bedroom, stock the cupboard with snacks, cue up Netflix and hibernate the cold days away.

We've done the hard work for you and curated the best snuggly knits, throw and hides to make your bedroom a cosy haven this winter.

    Tibetan Fur

This divine Tibetan Fur bed throw provides a rich, textural and luxe feel not to mention mega warmth factor to your bedroom. Draped loosely over the foot or spread over the entire bed for lush Game of Thrones style.

For the ultimate in snuggly chic, pair with matching cushions and lush velvet.

    Velvet

Velvet has made a huge comeback thanks to the divine Kip & Co ranges of bed linen, including quilt covers, pillowcases and cushions. We particularly love the rich 70's colour ways, including tobacco and silver.

Quilt covers double as end of bed throws, or layer velvet throws on luscious linen in a slept in fashion, just as sexy as summer bed head hair!

    Moroccan Magic

For warmth factor, you can't compete with the experts. These Gorgeous Woollen Pom Pom Blankets made by Berber Weavers of the Atlas Mountain Region of Morocco.

Hand made in the traditional Moroccan style, they are extremely warm and contain natural colour variations adding to the already chic aesthetic. Whichever way you style these beauties, you really can't lose.

    Chunky Knits

What screams warmth more than fond memories of your grandma and her knitting needles? Chunky woollen knit throws will channel these warm memories.

Adding texture and interest to the foot of the bed, these knits are best when in contrasting colour to your bed linen. Think steel grey throw on white linen, or vice versa for snuggle worthy results.

    Hides

We have to admit, we have gone a little hide crazy here at The Vignette Room this season. Reindeer hides, Icelandic sheepskins in every colour under the sun, deer hides, tibetan fur pelts and OMG my personal favourite the absolutely swoon worthy Himalayan Long Haired Goat Hides.

There is a hide to suit everyone and every interior and in my personal opinion every bare surface you can find!

Well, tonight I'm all set for a cosy night in with my favourite knitted throw, a hot cuppa and OITNB Season 4.

    Happy Hibernation!
